Learning Tips

READING RULES

"When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking”.

The rule really relates more to their reading, so when they come across a word they don’t know, they can use this rule to help them decode.  In terms of their spelling, they’re just going to have to memorize which word has an ee or an ea.   For example, “beach” or “sail”.

“Mean King Ed”

“King Ed” is the silent e, who shows up at the end of a VCe word.  He is mean because he makes all the vowels who come before him, “Say your name!”  I’m sure your first grader would be happy to demonstrate for you in a “Mean King Ed” voice.  He is different from his brother, “Eddie”, who likes to eat eggs.  Silly, I know.  So as you can see we have made the switch from short vowels, to long vowel patterns.  Please take any opportunity to reinforce these concepts at home as your child is reading and writing!
