Topic -Learning to Learn

So in this unit we will be encouraging our students to think about their own learning, think how learning happens and how they learn best. This self knowledge will help all of our students to learn more effectively as well as encourage respect for all learning styles.

The purposes of this unit are;

  1. to introduce children to some ideas about how learning takes place

  2. to provide them with some strategies to use in their own learning

  3. to encourage them to think about their learning as something over which they have control.

During their work they may well ask you about your own preferred ways of learning.

Please help your child by being as honest as you can, particularly about your own learning habits.

Please discuss the work with your child, trying to help them understand themselves as learners, and to see all of us, even adults as learners.

If you have any comments about the work your child has done, please get in touch.

HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 4- OCTOBER 8

Don’t forget to READ for 30 minutes each night and complete your reading calendar!

MONDAY (Writing): What are some things that make you really mad? What do you do when you get mad? (Be sure to write at least 5 sentences- GIVE DETAILS and TELL MORE. Begin each sentence with a capital letter and finish each one with an end mark).

TUESDAY (Language Arts): Do both sides of the word family practice page.

WEDNESDAY (Math): Practice pages.

THURSDAY (Spelling): Write a sentence using each of your spelling words. Circle each spelling word with a pencil or crayon.

FRIDAY (Review): Check your Charles Drew folder to see if you need to finish, re-do, or correct any papers. Get your weekly evaluation signed.

Notes:

Studying word families (like –ide) helps children learn to read and write unfamiliar words. For example, any child who understands the –ide family words on this page should be able to read and spell ride, tide, inside, and so on. When children learn to spell this way, they are able to transfer their knowledge to new words rather than having to memorize each word individually.
